SUSQUEHANNA RIVER WATER TRAIL RECEIVES NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Commenting on the “…incredible range of experiences…” offered along the Susquehanna River Water Trail, the Executive Director of the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership accepted the federal government’s designation of the Trail’s middle and lower sections as a National Recreation Trail.  The two sections total 103 miles stretching from Sunbury to the Maryland border.  The Susquehanna Greenway Partnership (SGP) spearheaded the effort to secure the designation from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

“There’s an amazing range of wildlife along this 103-mile section of the river,” he said, “including great blue herons and migratory shorebirds.  It’s one of the finest smallmouth bass fisheries in the East, and also provides canoeists with a variety of experiences.  The Water Tail received special recommendation from the American Canoe Association in 2005.” The Susquehanna River Water Trail is well suited as a recreation facility.  It has an extensive network of public access points, and a series of maps, guides, and signs for the Trail have been produced.  It is also associated with the Susquehanna River Sojourn program, which has been connecting canoeists with sections of the Trail for 15 years through its annual week-long river trips.
